7 Business Lessons to Level Up Your Business

As you listen to this special Episode #200 of the podcast, I’m very appreciative of you – my longtime listener!

I’m also grateful for those who have been around since 2010, when I started this entire journey!

Thank you to all my followers who have joined me in their financial and business journeys!

The Amanda Abella Story

I started the Making Money Your Honey podcast in 2016 and decided to name the podcast after my book.

When I started, I had no idea what I was doing. I saw that podcasts were popular in the financial space and thought podcasting sounded like fun.

I got everything set up in one weekend.

Business Advice and Lessons for Small Business Owners

Lesson 1:  You don’t have to take a long time to execute on projects!

Many of my followers have ideas that you don’t execute. People tend to procrastinate by taking too much time to weigh the pros and the cons. My team will tell you; I don’t think I execute.

I used to suffer from shiny object syndrome back in 2016. I’m going to change everything on a dime because so-and-so did this thing. At this point, the wheels started to fall off for me. At that time, I’d been freelance writing for about six years. I’d made a name for myself in the financial space. It was pretty easy for me to get gigs.

I was starting to make good money when I realized I was meant for bigger things. It was beginning to feel like I lost my reason for writing. In addition, my wrists started hurting badly, and I didn’t want to get carpal tunnel syndrome.

Lesson #2: If something’s not working for you and it’s frustrating, change what you’re doing!

It’s easy to blame outside circumstances. You have to switch your thinking to bring your power back.

Using Meditation for New Ideas

I’ve been meditating for ten years now. Several years ago, the word system kept popping into my head. At the time, I didn’t know what that meant. I’m like, what the fuck does that even mean? Nevertheless, this word kept popping up in my head. So I started investing in mentorship from people who better-understood systems. I found left-brained people and paid them for their guidance and advice.

Lesson #3: Don’t try to figure shit out yourself!

Go find people who know more than you do, and pay them to learn more.

Lesson #4: Scale Your Business!

You need to start thinking about scaling for those of you who are freelance service providers who offer one-on-one coaching.

Start thinking about your systems; otherwise, you end up overworked.

Pivoting in Business

In 2017, I would have to make massive, scary pivots and changes to scale my business model. So in the summer of 2017, Persuade to Profit was born. It’s our famous 90-day sales training program. Our clients get amazing results.

Lesson #5: Things change!

Everything evolves, including business. In the summer of 2017, Persuade to Profit was only six weeks long and focused more on influence and brand building. I charged $1,700 per client for the beta group.

When I brought P to P out into the marketplace, I made $10,000 in cash in two weeks. This was a big pivotal turning point for my business. Number one, I charged for the beta group, and I charged pretty good money at the time for a beta program.

Lesson #6: Stop doing work for free!

Stop giving away your programs for free. You can also launch your course without having all the assets because you need market validation first. I see business owners spending a lot of time, money, energy, and effort on videos and training without testing your idea in the marketplace. Then you slap it on a website and get pissed off when no one’s buying it.

Pre-sell first. Second, charge for the beta. You should be making money from the beginning and charge good money for the beta because it’s good shit that you’re giving.

Un-complicate Your Business Plan

We make up all these ideas in our heads about how complicated it is to make money. It’s not that complicated – solve a problem and sell the solution to the problem. That’s it.

I was inspired to grow my business because I had recently moved into a condo in Brickell, a lovely area in Miami. I had motherfucking rent to pay. That was it. That’s all that did it.

The other thing that happened is that I found Grant Cardone. When I had just made ten grand in two weeks, three people mentioned Grant Cardone to me. I was tired of being broke, so his message was the message I needed to hear at the right time. So I started following Grant Cardone and focusing on expansion. I started hearing for the first time about hiring a team and having employees.

Spend 95% of your time making money and 5% of the time managing your money – that was a fucking game changer for me. Because up until that point, I’d spent 95% of the time managing and only 5% of the time making it suitable.

I shifted and started listening to business, leadership, and sales podcasts. Then, I went to unleash the power with Tony Robbins. Because of my change of mindset, my business doubled in revenue, and I quit all my freelance writing clients in the summer of 2019.

Focus on Mastering the Skill Set

Don’t focus on the result; focus on mastering the skill set. When you master the skill set, you’re automatically going to get results. That’s what I did with sales, and now I’m mastering leadership. My growth edge is leading an internal team. I’m committed to learning the skill set, not the result that I’m trying to get.

When you scale and grow your business, you’ll have new issues to deal with. Next lesson problems are not a bad thing. I’ve learned this over time. They’re annoying, and you don’t like having them.

Lesson #7: Always shoot for bigger business!

When you get to six figures, you have a whole other level of problems. So we go hard on setting the right foundations from the beginning to avoid other issues later down the pipeline.

Change Your View on Debt

My view on debt has changed.

There’s a difference between going into debt over bullshit and spending more money than you earn and going into debt to collapse your business timeline, learning what you have to understand, making more money, and moving on.

Work to Achieve What You Manifest in Life and Business

Sometimes you just got to work. You can’t manifest, sit on a pillow all fucking day, visualize and not pick up the phone and not send an email and not do hard things. It doesn’t work that way. It takes work to fulfill your dreams and do what you want to do. And it’s worth it! So many people are afraid to lose relationships. I’ve let go of relationships that don’t need to be around while trying to get my vision out into the world. Now I’m trying to better myself. You don’t want to get on that train; get the fuck out. You’re not supposed to be here.

Others are afraid of what people are going to think of them. You can never make everyone happy, and you don’t want to. You want to attract those in a similar vibration to you – growing, thinking, and making things happen! A percentage of the population already does not like you for unknown reasons, so you might as well go big and achieve your goal. There’s also the fear of losing money. I’ve lost money. I’ve made money. That’s how you learn and get better at making money.

Kudos to My Team!

I am proud and excited about my team and where we’re going.

Moving forward, we are introducing 1000 Profit Tiers because we want 1000 women in Persuade to Profit.

We want to help 1000 women increase their sales by 30% minimum.

Kudos to My Community!

This podcast is about the Make Money, Your Honey community. It’s about creating superstars within our organization. It’s time for us to go big and expand. We want to go out into the world and help as many people as we possibly can. So thank you so much for being on this journey with me these past few years!

Thank you to those who have watched the transition and to my newer listeners; because we can’t do any of this stuff without you – and we’re about to go even harder in serving you moving forward!

Intellectual Property and Trademarking CYA with Ticora Davis

Have you wondered about legal issues with your content and are concerned that another company may copy your content? Want to find out how you can protect yourself and your business’ creative and intellectual property?

You’ve come to the right place! Read below for gems of wisdom about applying for a trademark and protecting your IP. Then, read on to learn what you need to know about copyright, trademark and how to CYA.

How Ticora Started Her Trademark Agency for Creatives

Ticora is a wife and a mom and was let go from her job as an attorney because she had a baby. “I ended up going on maternity leave and when my son was 10 days old he called me on the phone and said ‘I think you’re not fit for the success of this firm. You need to stay home and get over your pregnancy brain.”

Since when does having a baby mean you can’t do your job? Never! After applying for over 100 attorney jobs and not getting any leads, she decided to open her door of opportunity. She founded her law firm dedicated to creators worldwide – The Creator’s Law Firm.

“I realized what I wanted to create didn’t exist. What I wanted was a safe place for women to work – a place for people to have their ideas supported and validated. A place where someone could understand what it’s like to be a creative.”

“I’m so happy to see what I built with my own hands by the grace of God. This is a place where we give you the freedom and protection to create. We help our clients protect their proprietary processes, programs, and processes in their profits by way of giving them the legal support that they need.”

While doing patent research, “I began to understand the heart of entrepreneurs and the heart of creatives and why you’re all so passionate about your ideas and how frustrating it can be when they don’t come to fruition or when you don’t have people who can help you understand the law.”

The company has grown over the past four years, becoming a powerhouse in the legal community. With a 98.5% success rate for trademark registrations, she can serve and support clients monthly.

Grow Your Business and Protect Your IP

Ticora created her company for entrepreneurs to have the ability to grow their businesses with peace of mind.

She provides services related to trademarks, copyrights contracts, and general counseling services.

“We really want to help businesses who operate and thrive in their purpose.”

I love that we’re serving trailblazers and pioneers, and legacy-driven entrepreneurs.

Trademark and Copyright Talk

Ticora says that trademark and copyright don’t get talked about enough.

“And I don’t think there’s always room to add more because the law is always changing. Laws are not static.”

So what can be true one year isn’t always necessarily true or valid the following year.

Common Trademark Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make

Many times people announce their product prematurely and without legal protection. “I see that people share concepts or go to online communities and ask for feedback about potential concepts without legal protection.” Cora recommends against this practice because it’s perilous.

You want to put an application on the record with the trademark office to protect your idea. Don’t use Facebook to ask others’ opinions on a company name because another member on Facebook can easily steal it.

Another mistake Cora commonly sees is business owners using legal contract templates or using outdated contracts. Since the law changes, you’ll want to get your legal contracts updated every year to protect yourself and your company. “I see people sitting in a place of stagnation where their law or legal protection in their business has not matured alongside their strategic elements.”

Wise Company and Wise Council

“There’s a difference between wise company and wise counsel. I think you need both.”

She defines a wise company as your biz besties.

“Those are the people who are with you in the trenches, and you can turn to them and ask them questions.”

Wise counsel is someone who’s a mentor that can guide you along your journey.

Two Legal Components Every Business Owner Should Have

Cora recommends two major elements that business owners should have locked and loaded.

First, you’ll want to secure a great accountant, and you need to have a good attorney.

The Importance of Leveraging Your IP

Have you leveraged your intellectual property? That’s an important key item to think about because you can pass down your IP from one generation to the next. This creates an asset that can be licensed and used for recurring income.

“We need to look at what we built and say, how can I leverage this appropriately?”

Creating Contracts for Clients

She recommends using contracts when dealing with a client, especially if they’re going to pay you money. Ensure your agreement has terms and conditions that are updated on your website. Additionally, make sure that your contract covers what people can expect when they’re coming into your program and also covers your IP policy and privacy rights. Finally, it’s essential to make sure that people sign the agreement you have in place.

Another way you can protect yourself is to make sure you have your hired personnel, whether they’re an independent contractor or an employee, sign a work contract so they can’t legally use your intellectual property.

No matter how small your business is or how new your idea is, make sure you take the steps needed to protect your trademark and IP. Be careful whom you share your information with, and always get your contracts updated annually to give yourself the best protection you can receive for your business!

Keeping Follower Connections Close and Your Marketing Funnels Simple with Allie Bjerk

Allie Bjerk went from a designer to learning the ins and outs of the online learning industry.

Listen to how she overcame imposter syndrome and the importance of keeping a personal connection with your followers.

Working in Online Learning

After taking five years of college, Allie landed a job with an online learning company. Then, she took a two-week class from online experts before getting hired for her career.

Allie then decided to go into business for herself; however, she was underbidding work and then had a significant setback when a client charged back a $6000 project because she wanted to see more people come to her website.

Building Her First Business

Building a funnel for herself that sold a valuable product Allie offered, she built in an order bump for clients to add additional products to their cart. “I ended up making 10 K in the first two weeks from launching this funnel and I scaled it very quickly by month three; profiting $90,000 a month.”

In addition to giving her the income she needed, this marketing idea also completely re-framed her vision of operating her business. “Instead of being client to client, I was selling products and getting passive income.” Since she didn’t have to create deliverables for clients anymore, she could build her own business and scale her product.

How Allie Overcame Imposter Syndrome

“I have had imposter syndrome at different points and it will come back up in different ways,” says Allie. “If you can bring that into the light, look at it and know there’s some part of me that actually really gets enjoyment out of struggling.”

She says she had to talk herself out of imposter syndrome and change her mindset to move on and build her business.

Selling is Serving

Serving as selling is an important concept you’ll need to understand when you’re in business for yourself. If they’re not buying from you, they’re going to buy the same service from someone else who probably isn’t as good as you. I’ve seen that time and time again on sales calls with people. They usually tell me they want to join, but they just bought another product that is not as good, but now they are committed to the inferior quality product.

Giving Yourself Permission to Be Successful

We tend to have this mind-fuck going around that we aren’t good enough, don’t deserve to make money. Allie and I agree that we need to permit ourselves to be ourselves. We are unique, multifaceted humans that need to pull that together and show up as ourselves.

When you show up as yourself, you’ll attract more ideal clients. “Even if you’re selling automated products, people will see your authentic self come through.” Your energy comes through in your copy, ads, and images.

“Once you can own yourself, marketing becomes much easier. It takes time, work, and acceptance before you can get to that point of marketing your messaging.”

Keep Your Funnels Simple, Silly!

One of the common threads I’m finding is business owners getting sold into a program about Facebook ads. If you’re getting started on your entrepreneurship journey, don’t buy ads until you have an income flowing.

Allie is a believer in a minimal viable product. “How do you get a product to the market and get proof that people even want it? I think a lot of people start with the creation instead of the clarity and messaging or who it’s for, and that alignment piece before knowing if their product is viable.”

“The biggest advice I can give is don’t create anything until it’s already sold. If you can, pre-sell, even if it’s a coaching package.”

She also recommends not shying away from one-on-one early on because you get value from those one-on-one conversations. “Even if it’s a free strategy call that you’re giving people, you’re hearing their questions, what’s working well, what’s not working for them.”

Creating Client Connection

Allie stresses the importance of connecting with clients online.

“I answer all of my own Instagram messages. I have a chat on my website – I don’t want to lose touch with my followers.”

She doesn’t recommend that a team member handle your comments because you’ll lose valuable input for developing your products.

Using Your Personal Intuition to Achieve Business Success

Nikki Novo was recently on my podcast. She is my friend and soul sister and an intuitive and spiritual mentor who has scaled her business to over six figures in the spiritual space. I stumbled upon her website several years ago and found her in downtown Miami.

Read on to discover how Nikki pivoted from a successful writing career to becoming an expert in the spiritual space – or click play to listen to the interview in its entirety:

Raised in Miami to Cuban parents, Nikki graduated high school and decided to work in movies, “which is a Cuban parent’s worst nightmare.” says Nikki. “I’m pretty sure my parents thought I was going to LA to work in porn.” But, assuring her parents she wanted to work in regular movies, she studied PR, landed a job at Fox and Lionsgate, and fell in love with writing. She met many editors because she worked in the public relations department. “I met many editors and writers in LA. It was inspiring for me because it was the first time I saw people doing creative work and making money.”

Her father is a doctor, and her parents’ work philosophy is to be a doctor, attorney, or accountant. They were expecting her to take a regular 9 to 5 corporate job. Her parents wanted her to graduate from college so she would have job security. We understand the big fear of being entrepreneurial because it’s not seen as a safe career move.

Nikki Novo on Entrepreneurship

Nikki feels the opposite way about being an entrepreneur. “I always tell my friends the opposite. If I had to live off of a paycheck that like told me, I could only make this amount of money every two weeks, I find that very unsafe.” Nevertheless, she was happy that she could have a creative career that she loved and make a living. After breaking off a marriage, she moved to Miami to work. “I thought I could get more writing gigs if I move to a place where I have more connections.”

She started as an editor at MSN and NBC with her last full-time job at Refinery 29. I wrote about fashion and beauty, but around that time in about 2008, that’s when we had a blogging gold rush.” Realizing this was a booming type of work, she started blogging.

Since she was new to the singles scene, she decided to write about dating in Miami. “I ended up finding myself through dating and through the breakup. And that was one of my spiritual awakenings I wrote about.”

Many of the spiritual and self-help books at the time were authored by old white men. And then Gabrielle Bernstein came onto the scene. “Gabby was the first person I ever heard talk about thoughts affecting your reality.” This concept resonated deeply with Nikki so much that she signed up for Gabby’s group coaching program.”

Starting to Build Her Own Dream

Tired of creating content to build someone else’s dream, Nikki started building her own business. She first made a blogging course in 2011 that was sponsored by Squarespace. “I remember that big win for me, the worst blogging course ever, but it was the beginning of what I do today, so I’m grateful.”

Nikki met her husband, who was an arborist running his business using a paper calendar. She soon became his business manager, setting up tech systems to run his business more efficiently. Nikki continued to build her business as a side hustle but soon realized that managing her fiance’s company was energetically draining.

“I’m super grateful that I was able to test my crazy ideas with his business,” says Nikki. However, she soon realized that the business was draining her husband. Not able to run the business without her, Nikki felt the pressure to become the breadwinner in the family with the income from her side hustle.

Starting Her Intuitive Business

“I started doing readings and I remember pulling cards and I would say, ‘What can I do to make money?'” She recalls repeatedly pulling a card for mediumship and didn’t believe the cards were correct. Realizing she needed to believe in herself so she could move on with becoming the primary income earner in her family, Nikki moved into a more spiritual place, “There was so much power that came out of me.”

She started making money and hired a nanny to watch her three children. Then, investing money in a nanny to buy herself time, she began to offer more reading times to her clients. “What changed everything for me was that my spirit guide taught me a method.”

Nikki learned to read energy through reading the chakras. In addition, she studied Akashic records, a realm you can enter when you’re meditating. Through this process, she learned how to deliver information. Clients now understood her method, which made her process more consistent.

Remove Doubt from Your Business Mindset

“Doubt is similar to not being intentional with your time because you don’t know what to do with it.”

I agree with Nikki. The fact is, if you’ve got time to overthink, you’ve got way too much time on your hands.

She found that working on her business for over a year gave her a good doubt detox and the ability to build upon a business foundation.

How Nikki Novo Scaled Her Business

Charging her clients $325 a session, she completely booked her time. Then, realizing she needed to scale and her clients asking her for online courses, Nikki decided to build and sell her online course, Soul Seeker. Next, she created a next-level program, Soul Leader; however, it became hard to differentiate the two products.

Nikki soon realized that she needed to build a community around her brand, so she created Practice Circles. She started to attract other coaches, so she created her next course, Soul Teacher, for coaches who wanted to learn how to be intuitive.

How to Run a Business and Still Retain Your Femininity

There’s a dance between the feminine and the masculine when you are a female business leader. Understanding the Law of Polarity, we know the masculine and feminine energy is part of every daily experience. You need to bring them into balance to have a heart-centered business.

Nikki shares that there are two parts to every business: a virtual and a spiritual element. “This virtual part to me is creation. Anything we create is a co-creation rethink work, but we’re definitely in touch with everything else that’s happening.”

If you believe that you’re meant to do a specific type of work or believe the work you are performing is your calling, you have co-creation. So get inspired, take action, and give your workspace to grow organically.

Focus on Receiving Money, not Financials

It’s easy to get stuck on focusing on money; we all need money to live. However, Nikki says to focus on receiving and how you conduct your business. “If you walk out of the supermarket and someone offers to take your bags to your car, and you say no, you’re saying no to receiving. You can practice the concept of receiving money through tiny daily interactions.

She suggests practicing receiving in non-monetary ways, as money is a form of energy. “You can learn to receive money by risk because if you’re not receiving anything in your life, money doesn’t know the difference. If you’ve closed off everything, then you’ve learned to not receive. Money’s not going to be able to find a way in.” Nikki says you can start practicing by receiving what is being given to you every day.

Delegating Work to Employees

Moving responsibilities from your plate to your employee’s or contractor’s plate translates into money because when you come from a place of heart space, you can be supported in your work. You don’t have to create super money mantras to make money.

“Learning how to be supported on a people level and being surrounded by people that supported me translated to ‘the universe supports me in this work.'”

Grounding

Nikki teaches grounding so clients can bring their energy back into their bodies.

“I find the reason people are ungrounded is that they think being ungrounded gives them more freedom.”

However, she is quick to note that being ungrounded means that suffering will land in your lap.

Your Business Energy

Your business is its entity with its energy. Nikki suggests looking at the moving parts and people working in your business and making sure you are tapping into your business energy. “You can sense where that energy is trying to move because that energy is moving all the time.”

Her advice is to be tuned in to your business, become your company’s visionary. Understand what your team is doing and where the energy is leaving your body. Then, when you are present in your business, you’re taking advantage of your business’s energy and using this energy to grow your company.

Ask your business, “What do you have to say to me?” Then sit in meditation, journal, or free-write. Let your hand and your mind receive your business energy and see what answers you are getting. “When you have a conversation with the energy of your business, you become more heart-centered with time and let go of ego.” Nikki believes we need to let go of our ego in business to be successful.

Trust Your Intuition

Learning how to listen to and trust your intuition is training to come back to becoming self-aware. Your intuition is part of a relationship you have with yourself. Unfortunately, you may have lost trust in yourself or your intuition, which is where Nikki comes in to teach others how to discover your personal intuition.

Believe You Are On the Right Path

“What if you were to tell yourself every day, that you’re on the right path? What would you do?” If you believe you are on the right path, what would you do today? This process eliminates self-doubt in yourself and gives you confidence that you are where you need to be.

Decide that you’re on the right path. As you decide that you’re on the right track, you won’t need to second guess yourself. Then, you can confidently make decisions as a leader.
